Tonight God showed me a picture of what He is like, using my earthly father.  I was trying to get to a friend’s house for a dinner party.  I was reading her directions and ended up missing just about every turn that I needed to make and I had no idea where I was trying to get to.  I had never been to her house before.  So I drove around for awhile and ended up getting more and more lost as the time ran on and it got later and later.  Finally I dialed my folk’s number on my cell phone and said, “Dad, I need you to get out the phone book, I’m lost.”  So he proceeded to do just that and asked me where I was and where I was trying to get to.  When he found me on the map he told me which road I needed to get on to get where I needed to go.  I asked him to go ahead and tell me the rest of the directions, thinking that I would be able to remember them and not get lost again.  However, my dad knows me better than that and simply said, “No, I will talk you there.  Call out the streets as you get to them.”  Finally, I got to the place I needed to be, and only 45 minutes late. :)  As I hung up the phone, I didn’t realize the significance of what just happened…it wasn’t until just now when my world slowed down enough that I realized God showed me Himself through my beloved earthly father.

God does this exact same thing with us.  We are trying to get somewhere…we have a general idea of where we are going…but do not know the specifics of getting there.  So, being human, we try to follow the world’s directions which are not very specific and tend to lead us down the wrong roads…they are full of error.  Then, when we finally realize that we are completely lost and are just going in circles, we remember, “Oh yeah, God said He would always be here.”  So, we call on Him in our time of need.  He sees where we are and then starts telling us where we need to be and how to get there.  At some point, I know I always say, “Ok, thanks God, I can take it from here if you’ll just tell me how.”  And He responds with the same loving kindness that my father responded with…a response of knowing a person intimately…”No, I will talk you there.  Call out the streets as you get to them.”  You see, God wants to be there every step of the way with us…”talking us through it.”  He doesn’t want us to go through the struggle of calling on Him, Him telling us the directions, and then us getting lost again.  He wants so badly for us to stay in communication with Him so that we can take the path right to the place we need to be.  And when we get there, sometimes life gets too busy and we forget to thank Him for getting us there.  But at some point we will always look back and realize the greatness of His loving kindness and realize that we can always depend on Him for everything.
